TAXCO, approximately 170 kilometers south of Mexico City (2:30 hours by bus)

[On the northern part of Guerrero, approximately 170 kilometers south of Mexico City (2:30 hours by bus)]

Taxco, known as the Mexican “Silver City”, is one of the most important mining centers of the continent. Over 1,000 meters above sea level, its narrow and often hidden cobblestone streets and alleys offer extraordinary views almost in every direction. Dozens of shops display the magnificent skills of its craftsmen with silver products for all tastes and budgets. The Santa Prisca and San Sebastián Cathedral in the heart of the city is one of the most important expressions of Mexican Baroque. A magic city with magnificent sunsets that are best enjoyed from one of its many terraces.

Comfortable clothes and sun block are recommended, as the best way to enjoy the city is walking. You can also rent a motorcycle, a very practical way to move around and visit the viewpoint.

VIP TIP. Don’t be afraid to bargain when buying silver, and make sure to visit different shops and compare before paying. CHECK OUT OUR TAXCO PHOTO GALLERY. HERE

XOCHIMILCO, 23 kilometers away from Mexico City's downtown

XOCHIMILCO, 23 kilometers away from Mexico City's downtown

Xochimilco is a place filled with magic. Its network of water canals with canoe-like boats decorated in vivid colors (the famous “trajineras”) bring back to life the city’s prehispanic past.

Once in the pier, there are two choices: the first is to take the canals designed for tourism, where mariachis can hop into your boat and perform a serenata. You can buy almost anything: from flowers to souvenirs.  It’s vivid and colorful, specially during the weekends. The second option is riding a canal that covers a couple of dozen of kilometers, and allows you to appreciate the region’s ecological diversity in a peaceful silence. This is perfect for those who love nature.

VIP TIP. You pay per boat, not per person. The average price is between $140 to $160 pesos per hour.

TEOTIHUACAN, 50 kilometers away from Mexico City

TEOTIHUACAN, 50 kilometers away from Mexico City

The prehispanic city of Teotihuacan –“The place where men become Gods”, as its nahuatl meaning suggests– was the most populated urban center in Mesoamerica, and is one of the most visited spots in Mexico today. This place, just fifty kilometers away from the city, is truly majestic and a mandatory visit for any history lover. Even more so when one considers that this site, declared a World Heritage, withholds the secrets of the Mexicas (one of which may be the reason for their disappearance, a yet unsolved mystery).

VIP TIP. It’s a long walk, so it’s better to use comfortable clothes, sun block, and a hat. The place offers guided tours in English (and Spanish), restaurants, and basically, all the services you might need.

Getting there:
By bus. You can take a bus from the Northern bus station (Central de Autobuses del Norte). Before purchasing a ticket, make sure the bus is headed to the archeological site and not to the town. Check the your return schedule before you leave.
By taxi. Private tours with a car and driver/guide can be arranged at most hotels for a reasonable fee (specially for groups). It’s about a 45-minute drive from the city, if you use the highway.

FYI. Most travel agencies offer half a day or full day tours to the site, adding to the mix a visit to the Plaza de la Tres Culturas and the Basilica of Guadalupe.

TEPOZTLAN, 70 kilometers from the south of Mexico City

TEPOZTLAN, 70 kilometers from the south of Mexico City

Tepoztlan –pronounced “Teh-pos-tlan”– is a small city in the state of Morelos, that sits in a lush valley surrounded by majestic mountains cutting through a bright blue sky. Downtown, a sixteenth century convent and church rise above its market. On the north, one finds the Tepozteco, a pyramid built on a mountaintop by the Aztecs about seven hundred years ago to honor Tepoztecatl, the god of fertility and pulque.

Spiritual seekers from all over the world visit Tepoztlan, a magical and mystical place, in which having one’s chakras realigned, relaxing in an ancient temazcal, discovering one’s fortune with a palm or card reader, are just some of the many activities to be done.
