LOOKING FOR WORK?

LOOKING FOR WORK?

The things you must do and not do during a job interview

After waiting for it for a long time, you finally get an interview with a recruiter that can help you get a job. This is an opportunity to give a great impression and increase the chances of getting what you want. It is necessary, in this sense, to be prepared for it and review the following points:

1. You must show interest in the company that would be hiring you. You should have to be able to answer the question regarding what they do. Knowing their business, their products or services, and its size (at least) is fundamental. (You can generally find this information in the company’s webpage.)

2. Do not ask, at the beginning of the interview, how much they would be paying you. Otherwise, you would give off the impression that you are only interested in your financial situation. This question is only permitted once all the other issues relating to your abilities and the work, in itself, have been talked about.

3. Do not speak badly of your former employer or you will give the impression of still being caught up in a previous work-relationship and not being focused in your future at the company. It also generates the feeling that, in case things go wrong in the new company, you will act exactly the same.

4. Many recruiters will want to know how well you know yourself and what you consider to be your strong points and areas of opportunity. Answer honestly and do not try to come off as someone flawless (remember: even your strong points have a dark side).

5. Do not tell your life story: listen carefully to what they’re asking you and answer promptly and directly as asked.

6. Do not use foul language or talk too loosely: this is a formal meeting, even if the environment seems friendly and comfortable.

7. Ask more. Always ask, at the end of the interview, more about the job. It will prove that you have been listening and that you are interested in knowing more.

8. Always be prepared to answer two key questions: What do you want to do?  Where do you want to go? Answer without wandering off.

Looking for a job is a full-time job. In this task, the “job interview” is extremely important because it’s your opportunity to present yourself to the world. In your performance lies the possibility of getting ahead and being one step closer to your desired end. Good luck!
