SAN JUAN MARKET
Time seems to stop under the fluorescent Light of the San Juan Market isles. Everything eatable from the seas and earth can be found in this magical place. A bit like Harry Potter looking for the perfect wand, the chefs in Mexico try to find their “magic” ingredients in these market stalls where every sense is awaken in a labyrinth of colorful wonders.
Everyone seem busy in the market, chopping, and cleaning, blending, mixing, cutting; is the sound of a gastronomic feast! There is color everywhere: Red fish bathe in a small ray of sunlight sneaking trough the ceiling, green peppers hidden in the dark, orange card boards offering the “fresh catch of the day”, brown baskets hanging from the roof, mangos, coffee it’s intoxicating
There is one corner particularly attractive for culinary lovers, home to a small shop that welcomes visitors with a plastic glass of tasty red wine. In between tons of cheese and cold cuts one can only guess someone is cooking the best “tapas” in the world.
Everything from “brie cheese” to “jamon the jabugo” this is probably the smallest and richest delicatessen in the world. After the first bite you will completely forget that you are standing in the middle of a market trying a slice of heaven for $60 pesos (5usd). For dessert try their famous “mascarpone cheese with honey and almond”.
The next stop in the gastronomic experience is just around the corner: The “Triana” café. Don Pablo, a kind man with a big smile is there to offer you the best coffee of Veracruz. Try it “Italiano” mode.
San Juan Market is located in downtown Mexico city, taking a taxi and arranging for it to pick you up a couple of hours later is a good idea.
